Start by tracking, not by cutting

Most budgets fail in week one because they start with rules. A better first step is simply to write down what you spend for seven days, with no judgment. The spending tracker has columns for the date, what you bought, the amount, a category, need or want, and how you felt.

After a week, patterns are easy to spot: the small daily buys that add up, the evenings you spend more when you are tired, the category that is bigger than you thought.

Find the charges that repeat

The subscription audit page walks you through your last few bank and card statements. List every charge that repeats, such as streaming, apps, memberships and free trials that turned paid. Then write the yearly cost next to each one and decide: keep, cancel or downgrade.

Seeing the yearly cost instead of the monthly one often makes the decision much easier.

Then build your first budget

The budget worksheet has five columns: category, planned, actual, difference and notes. Fill in the planned amounts at the start of the month, starting with essentials like housing, utilities, food, transportation and minimum debt payments. Then add savings, then wants. Fill in the actual amounts as the month goes on.

  • Use real numbers from your bank app. Rough is fine, made-up is not.
  • Keep the pages together in a folder and look at them once a week.
  • If you share money with someone, fill them in together.
